This is a bigger for the privacy folks with Android Phones. Security Researcher Trevor Eckhart has proved that your Android Phone has been watching and logging almost everything you do.
Eckhart is calling this a “rootkit” developed by Carrier IQ. A war of words has flowing in the press regarding this discovery Carrier IQ calling it a diagnostic mode. They also have fired off a Cease and Desist Letter to Eckhart, who the enlisted the help of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and they followed up with a letter of their own telling Carrier IQ to Cease and Desist.
This mornings BBC reports the US Senate, is becoming involved, and both Google and Apple were summoned in May 2011 to answer questions regarding privacy and their Smart Phones. I some how feel this is just the TIP of something much larger coming. Could Carrier IQ be held legally liable for it’s tracking. I sure think so but we will have to wait and see what the legal eagles do with this one.
This bears watching…. Here is his video.
Update 12.6.2011 6:45am – TJ Wheeler just sent in an article that we will call and update on this story. Infoworld.com is reporting a second security researcher’s findings on CarrierIQ, and that they are not so invasive after all. Yet he does admit that carriers as a whole have a long way to go with Customer Privacy.
