Last night 9to5 Mac noted a report from a Taiwanese news outlet which claimed in part that Apple would be putting the next-generation iPhone into production next month. Because Apple sells more than 150 million iPhones a year with a sprawling network of suppliers making components, its ability to maintain such a wide cone of silence has become near-impossible. Apple has been mum but it appears that the upcoming iPhone will switch to sapphire screen coating instead of the thin Corning Gorilla Glass that has been there since 2007. And how do we know this is happening? Last November, Apple paid $578 million to GT Advanced Technologies in Arizona to help it produce lots and lots of sapphire, used commonly in high-end watches because it’s so durable and scratch resistant. But what wasn’t yet clear was whether that meant Apple would be taking the big step of covering the whole iPhone screen with it. (more…)

Last week, we shared a pair of photos of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5S, revealing a few details such as a larger-capacity battery and a new dual-LED flash system for the rear camera. At the time, we had some questions about the main chip from the device, which lacked an A-series identification printed on it and which carried date codes indicating that it had been manufactured in October 2012. Apple hasn’t announced the iPhone 5S yet, but Chinese clone specialist GooPhone has already created a cheap knockoff of it. And it has done a pretty incredible job.
