UPDATE: 01.06.2012 3:35pm central – Is your facebook login not working?  Here’s WHY!! Facebook locks down 45,000 accounts this is affecting mostly UK users we are told.  Here’s the latest report for the Telegraph on this.

There is a new variant of the “Ramnit” computer worm now circulating on facebook. So far it has reportedly stolen more than 45,000 Facebook user credentials. It has infected approx 800,000 machines through Dec 2011.

It is banking on the theory that most users use the same username/password to log into everything they do on the web. Makes things much easier to remember. It can then use those credentials to log into banking, credit card, and email among other things.

The new worm spreads through wall posts with links to infected websites. Click the link and you are infected. Very easy way to spread it as most users are too curious and don’t stop and think before they click. Never trust any post from anyone where the message seems not what they would normally post or say.

This is the best case I have found yet for arguing for separate passwords/usernames for every site a user accesses. If a corporate VPN allows you to set up your own username/password then they deserve to get hacked through it. The rest are all in the user’s control and should be managed like a bank vault.

  1. You know it seems weekly that there is a NEW virus on Facebook. That’s one of the reason’s I’m not on there as much or at least don’t do the APPS as much there. Facebook security is slow to respond and doesn’t seem to check the games and apps before they go LIVE for virus issues.
